II Metropolitan Olympiads in Physics

On June 23rd, the II Metropolitan Olympiads in Physics were carried out at the Physics Department of the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires. More than 80 students participated representing 10 schools.

From ORT Belgrano campus, the students who took part in it were trained during the Physics Olympiad training program. The ICT students won the following awards:

Nicolás Ponieman: 1st award
Ezequiel Fattori: 1st award
Ezequiel Genender Peña: 2nd award

Congratulations!

Physics Conference at Almagro Campus

Last Wednesday 9th, the first of the 2008 Physics Conferences was carried out. This activity targeted all the students who were interested in subjects related to Physics, which are not covered by the classic curriculum.

On this occasion, Claudio Sanchez, Industrial Engineer specialized in means of communication, talked about the well-known animated series “The Simpsons” and “Futurama”.

Since many of these series scriptwriters are scientists from important universities, there are countless references to physical, astronomical and mathematical principles. For that reason, this conference really caught the participants’ attention.

Physics Conference: Weather Forecasting, Science or Guesswork?

Today morning, ORT Almagro students participated in the Physics conference “Weather Forecasting, Science or Guesswork?” by Andrea Celeste Saulo. The speaker talked about some aspects of weather forecasting: how the basic meteorological information is obtained, the laws of Physics which explain the atmosphere behavior and its evolution, and the interpretation of the results obtained by solving various equations.

Conference: Why do we believe that dark matter exists?

On October 10th, Dr. Susana Judith Landau will give a lecture called “Why do we believe that dark matter exists?” at Noel Werthein Auditorium, Almagro campus.

Dr. Landau works at the Physics Department of the Mathematical and Natural Sciences School of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from the UBA, a PhD in Astronomy from the Astronomy and Geophysics School of the National University of La Plata, and she is an Assistant Researcher at the CONICET.

Those who attend the meeting will have the chance to know what astronomers and physicists call ‘dark matter’. Then, they will get a detailed description of astronomical observations in galaxies and clusters of galaxies, which lead us to think that such type of matter exists in the universe.

There are limited vacancies, so those who are interested in attending please contact the Physics Department.

13th ORT Olympiads in Physics – Belgrano Campus

For the thirteenth consecutive year, ORT Technical School –Belgrano campus - will carry out the Team Olympiads in Physics on October 1st. This is the only national event of such characteristics, and the aim is to encourage the participants’ interest in Physics, and to promote exchange through recreational activities. In these years, more than 20 schools have participated in each event.

The activity has been scheduled as follows:
• 8:00 a 9:00hs. Teachers: Discussion of the problems.
• 9:00hs. Students’ entry.
• 9:05hs. Inauguration of the activity.
• 9:10 a 12:30hs. Development of the competition.
• 12:30 a 13:30hs. Lunch for the teachers and the students-participants.
• 15:30hs. Conference by PhD Mariano Sigman: ”Physics of the Perception”
• 16:00 hs. Announcement of the order of merit and presentation of certificates.
Closing of the activity.

Physics Conference: “The ball doesn't turn” Belgrano Campus

In 1997, during the elimination rounds for France 1998 World Cup, the Argentine football team lost against Ecuador. At the press conference, Passarella - the then Argentine coach- immortalized the phrase, “the ball doesn’t turn…”. Such phrase generated a great deal of comments, jokes, and it even became the name of a radio program. But, beyond all these repercussions, how true is it? Dr. Daniel de Florián will give a conference on the physical perspective of this particular effect. The meeting will take place next Wednesday 5th at Noel Werthein’s Auditorium. The activity will be exclusively addressed to those school students who reserve their vacancy at the Physics Department.

Conference: Relativity Theory

The Physics Department will organize a series of conferences throughout the year. Today, the first conference was held at Noel Werthein Auditorium. Dr. Diego Hurtado de Mendoza gave a lecture on “Einstein’s Relativity Theory” for 3rd-year students from Almagro campus.
