ORT Schools prepare their students for the Cambridge-ESOL examinations. After that, they take a computer-based test, since it complies with the technological standards requested.

ORT Schools have incorporated Cambridge-ESOL exams to the English curriculum so as to offer students better training, to promote the study of the language, to facilitate the access to superior education and to motivate students to get more confident in their ability to use English successfully.

The exams cover the different levels of knowledge in English and our students have been prepared all the year round with material specially designed by the schools, and in all the linguistic skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

“HP Innovation in Education” Grant

In August, Hewlett Packard gave ORT Technical Schools an award for winning the “HP Innovation in Education” grant. The winning project incorporated the new educational technologies to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics, and it was developed by the Teaching & Learning Resources Centre (“CREA”), along with the Mathematics Department and Technological Education Area.

The award consists of an HP Mobile Digital Classroom (estimated in U$S 70,000), which contains resources such as Mini Note PCs, Digital Boards and Tablet PCs.

This new computing equipment will be incorporated into the classrooms and laboratories in September, thus increasing the amount and variety of technological resources with which our students will learn, and contributing to the continuous improvement of the educational quality of our institution.

It is important to stand out that this is the 2nd time that Hewlett Packard grants such an award to our institution. In July 2007, ORT Technical Schools obtained the “Technology for Teaching Higher Education” grant, thanks to a project developed by the CREA and the Technological Education Area. The grant enabled the implementation of an educational research project based on the application of mobile technologies to the classrooms. 30 teachers and more than 1600 students are involved in this project, which will continue till the end of 2009.

National Day of Memory for Truth and Justice

The 3rd-year Coordination Department has been carrying out different activities to commemorate the National Day of Memory for Truth and Justice. Among them, a meeting with Tatiana Sfiligoy -the first granddaughter found by Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo- was organized. Tatiana told her story and answered the students’ questions.

We would like to share with you a text by Eduardo Galeano, which was read during the activity:

Does history repeat? Or does it repeat as a punishment to those who are incapable of listening to it? There is no dumb history. No matter how much they burn it, or break it, or lie about it, human history refuses to shut up. The right to recall does not appear among the human rights established by the United Nations, but today it is vital to vindicate it and put it into practice: not so as to repeat the past, but to prevent it from repeating; not so that we -who are alive- become ventriloquists of those who are dead, but to be able to speak aloud without being condemned to the perpetual eco of stupidity and disgrace. When the memory is truly alive, it is in the air we breathe, and memory, from the air, breathes us.
