National Day of the Solidarity Student

The National Day of the Solidarity Student was commemorated on October 8th at ORT Almagro campus. This new meeting between parents, students and teachers was organized with the aim of acknowledging those students who –during this school year- have participated in the different activities of the “Ceibo Project – Solidarity Students’ Program”.

It was a moving event: all the educational community shared the achievements and experiences of the group. More than 90 students of the senior high-school level were able to renovate and show day by day their commitment and responsibility in the construction of a better future.

We congratulate them all!

Solidarity Concert at Belgrano Campus

ORT Technical School, Belgrano campus, invites the community at large to attend a concert of the symphony orchestra of Channel 7, composed of more than 50 musicians. The event will take place on December 11th at Montañeses 2845, 8 pm. This activity is part of the solidarity initiative “To Give is to Give” (“DAR es DAR”) carried out by students, graduates and teachers of the Institution.

The entrance fee will cost $10, and the money raised will be destined to the School Nº 56, Ángel C. Bardelli, from Puerto Yeruá, Concordia, Entre Ríos. To get the tickets, you can send an email to daresdar@ort.edu.ar or you can call us: 4789-6541.

Collecting Training Shoes

Within the framework of the student solidarity program, we began to sponsor the School nº 40 from Villaguay, Entre Ríos Province. A group of teachers visited the Institution and saw what their major needs are. Therefore, we have committed ourselves to this cause, and all our students and teachers will collaborate with the “Training Shoes Collection Campaign”. Students from ORT senior high school will collect training shoes from November 12th to 16th, so we need your help: please, send footwear in good conditions and write down their size number on the soles (size nº 20 to 40). Thanks.

13th Walk for the Real Integration of Disabled People

Next November 11th, there will be a long walk from Plaza Congreso to Recoleta, which was organized by B´nai B´rith Argentina, The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and the AMIA. COME AND WALK WITH US!!! WE CAN DO IT TOGETHER!!!

Sponsored by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, all the citizens are invited to participate in the "13th Walk for the Real Integration of Disabled People". The aim is that more people get to know their goals and understand that this is a need of the society at large. The objective is to achieve ‘accessibility’, by which our brothers with special abilities can overcome certain obstacles which do not take them into account, such as their access to the health system, to their rehabilitation, to work, to transportation, also to beat architectural barriers and to avoid them being undermined by our culture, especially by the social mass media.

Meeting point for the 13th walk on November 11th: as usual, it will be at the intersection of Callao and Rivadavia Avenues at 11 o'clock. From there, the participants will walk along Callao Avenue towards Recoleta neighborhood, and during the journey, they will enjoy performances by different solidarity bands and soloists, culminating with an artistic show at the small square of Quintana Avenue.

The first walk was carried out in 1994. These walks were declared “of interest” by: • The Presidency of the Nation • The Senate of the Nation • The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology • The Secretariat of Worship [Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Commerce and Worship].

2nd Workshop on Disability and Design

The 2nd Workshop on Disability and Design will be carried out at ORT Technical School, Belgrano campus, from October 29th to November 2nd. Some of the activities will include: a lecture on ‘Self-Improvement’ by sportsmen of non-conventional sports; an experience-based workshop on ‘Paintings in the Dark’ by blind painters; an integrative sports meeting with the participation of special schools; a sports activity on wheelchairs; a lecture on ‘Architectural Barriers’, etc.

National Day of the Solidarity Student

The Federal Council of Education has decided to add “The National Day of the Solidarity Student” to the school calendar. Last September 19th, at the 4th Meeting of the Federal Council of Education, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Daniel Filmus, and the top educational authorities of the 24 national jurisdictions agreed to settle October 8th as “The National Day of the Solidarity Student”.

During the meeting, the national educational authorities passed the measure in recognition of the solidarity carried out daily by thousands of Argentine students, and in memory of the 9 students and the teacher of Eco School of the City of Buenos Aires, who perished on October 8th when they were returning from a solidarity activity conducted at School Nº 375, El Paraisal, Chaco Province.

The authorities also agreed to create a document to register solidarity activities developed by students and teachers. The article Nº 32 of the National Law of Education establishes that the Federal Council of Education has to encourage the jurisdictions to guarantee youth voluntary activities and solidarity educational projects to cooperate with the community development. ORT Technical Schools adhere to this national initiative, which recalls the tragic events that took place on the date of “The Day of the Solidarity Student”. This action stimulates the work of the students who carry out various youth voluntary activities to cooperate with the community development, and promotes the teaching of road education.

Missing Children at ORT

The President and Vice President of Missing Children Argentina -a non-profit civil organization- had a talk with ICT students on the activities they organize. During the meeting, they asked students to collaborate in the development of a web system, which enables all the volunteers in Missing Children to have access to the information of lost kids and generate different reports.

At the same time, teachers from the ICT track will train these volunteers on IT tools, and the students will give them technological assistance when they need it.

This meeting took place thanks to the initiative of the CIOs group, a network of 270 Systems Managers from the leading companies of the country who help Missing Children and know about the Solidarity-Learning methodology of ORT Technical School, Belgrano campus.

Distinctions for Outstanding Students and Solidarity Students

Rosh Hashanah leads us to reflect on the past year, undertake new projects, and fundamentally to celebrate.Today - within the framework of such celebrations- we have organized a meeting with parents, students, and teachers in our campus, with the aim of recognizing those who participate in the "Solidarity Students Program" (ORT Senior High School) and the "Outstanding Students Program" (ORT Junior High School).

Diana Grimbe (Principal of our school), Luis Perez (Director of Studies), and 6th–year flag bearers from all the tracks gave each of them a certificate and a medal which corroborate that they belong to the above mentioned programs.

We all enjoyed the moment because we were able to recognize their dedication and congratulate them! We also had the chance to share and announce the beginning of a new project: the sponsorship of a rural school in the Province of Entre Ríos, which will enable us to continue developing the integral training of our students. It was truly emotional and motivating, and as we said, we hope to continue working family and school together to educate our students for a prosperous, happy and peaceful future.

Invitation to Solidarity Meeting

ORT Technical school (Belgrano campus), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, has organized the 2nd Jurisdictional Meeting on Solidarity Education of the City of Buenos Aires: “Education and Service”. The meeting will take place on September 25th from 8.30 to 16hs at Montañeses 2845.

Presidential Award: Solidarity Schools 2007

The President of the Nation and the Minister of Education, Science and Technology awarded students and teachers from the Industrial Design track of ORT Technical School (Belgrano campus) an Honorable Mention for the development of the solidarity educational experience: “Hands in action multiply”.

The main objectives of the Presidential Award “Solidarity Schools” are: to recognize those schools that best integrate the students’ academic learning with the solidarity service to the community; to foster the development of solidarity educational activities at school; to encourage the articulation of the school and the different organizations of the civil society; and to strengthen and promote the ‘culture of involvement, solidarity and citizen commitment’.

Presentation of the Mouse Emulator Project

Alan Kharsansky, David Vilaseca and Dario Mischener, teachers from the ICT track, Belgrano Campus, presented the Mouse Emulator Project for Disabled People on August 19th at the VII Latin American Congress on Special Educational Computing; the VII Latin American Exhibition of Computing, Telecommunications and Software Companies; and the II International Forum on Adaptive Technology and Technical Support.

ORT at Marcos Aguinis’ New Book

We are very pleased to inform that the writer Marcos Aguinis has mentioned “ORT Sponsorship Project” in the “Good News” chapter of his new book called “The Atrocious Charm of Being Argentine 2”.

ORT Sponsorship Project is carried out by a group of students, graduates and teachers from the Industrial Design track (Belgrano campus) at a country school in Villa Adela, in the north of Santa Fe Province.

Solidarity Project with Francisco de Vitoria School

Within the framework of the Ceibo Project - Solidarity School, which promotes the practice of solidarity as an educational experience in all our students, 5th-year students from the Business Administration track (Almagro campus) are working on the creation of a ‘toy library’. This is carried out along with the students' coordinator, Lic. Liliana Kuperman, and 7th-grade students from Francisco de Vitoria School.

This primary public school is near our campus. After the first meetings and visits on the part of our students, we agreed (together with the School’s principals and teachers) that ORT students could not only pass on knowledge and acquired experiences, but also help in the continuous improvement of Francisco de Vitoria School. For that reason, ORT students have been working with 7th-graders from such institution in order to equip a playing room according to the needs and characteristics of the little ones.

Last Friday they visited our school and 5th-year students were the ones in charge of the ‘tour’ around ORT.

F. Onetto says: “The human being is not only satisfied with receiving; he has the need to give. The need to give is the need to experiment that one can do people good, can take care of others, heal, protect and nourish them. Doing people good is also gratifying because the other gets some benefit. By providing opportunities to take care, feed, teach, help and assist others, we are creating well-being conditions”. Therefore, we will continue building spaces where our students can develop active and committed bonds with the surrounding community. Soon you will get more news on this project, so that we can continue sharing such a fruitful experience.

ORT at Fundación Tzedaká’s Great Solidarity Night

On August 8th, Fundación Tzedaká organized a fundraising event at the Sheraton hotel for the third consecutive year. The “Great Solidarity Night” raises part of the funds that help to provide assistance to more than 9.000 people in need from our community throughout the country.

On this occasion, ORT Technical Schools were present at this initiative and collaborated with their best asset: the students. They took part in fundraising activities and in the logistics of the event.

ORT Argentina congratulates Lic. Darío Werthein on his new position as President of Fundación Tzedaká, and wishes him the greatest success.

Tzedaká – National Campaign to Collect Medicines

The 3rd National Campaign to collect medicines will take place from June 11th to 17th. Institutions from all around the country will be involved, with the purpose of collecting drugs for 4500 people who suffer from chronic illnesses and need those medicines to live.

Thanks to the effort of volunteers and institutions from all over the country, the previous campaigns raised $270.240 in medicines during 2005, and $453.423 in 2006. This translates into the possibility to keep providing thousands of people with health care.
